LEDs powered from the sun will bring the benefits of civilization in the poorest countries

Thursday, November 5, 2009

Photovoltaic cells placed on the printed circuit board, commonly known as solar panels, are not something new. Likewise, can not be called unusual LED lamps and ultra-thin lithium batteries. However, the combination of these three solutions can bring light into the house and a half billion people living in the poorest countries and virtually deprived of access to electricity.

The famous Danish scientist Hans Krebs Frederik (Frederik Krebs), is a senior fellow Risø National Laboratory, proposed to combine solar cells and LED lighting, which should lead to cheaper coverage in some of the world's poorest regions, particularly in African countries, where usually a lot of sunlight

Although LEDs are already proven their reliability over the past few years, their effectiveness is still very low and does not exceed one percent. However, when their price will fall to a mark of $ 7 apiece, such lamps can reach its full potential, despite low efficiency.

At present some prototypes of such lamps are being tested in Zambia. The principle of their action is extremely simple - flexible solar cells with thin batteries store energy during the day and at nightfall they are rolled into cone-shaped lamps and fixed in such a situation, illuminating the room in which there are.
