Wireless technology WiGig provide data rates of 1 to 7 Gb / s

Friday, December 11, 2009

United Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig), which includes such companies as Intel, LG, Microsoft and Samsung, announced the completion of the first specification of the same name by wireless technology. Standard WiGig uses a frequency of 60 GHz and a special format for ultra-dense data compression. This allows you to transfer data at speeds far exceeding the performance of traditional Wi-Fi networks.

Even in its original version WiGig technology can provide data rates from 1 to 7 Gb / s, which is more than 10 times faster than in networks of Wi-Fi. Accordingly, the new standard is able to provide opportunities simply unattainable using existing techniques, for example, wireless transmission of data interfaces DisplayPort, HDMI, and even PCI-Express.

Despite the greatly increased speed, technology WiGig maintain backward compatibility with standard Wi-Fi and can work with low power devices, such as mobile phones. However, the maximum range wireless technology WiGig not yet identified and are likely to be relatively low due to significant interference of radio waves at high frequencies.

Nevertheless, thanks to technology standard WiGig beamforming antenna can work at a distance of at least 10 meters. This is sufficient for use in home theater systems, computer adapters, and wireless monitors. Members of the organization of Wireless Gigabit Alliance should get specifications of the new wireless standard in early 2010 and soon thereafter be able to develop their own devices on its basis.
